Britain did not adopt a uniform or unified approach to the legal aspects of empire. It neither exported its domestic law nor its domestic legal system wholesale to its new colonies and possessions. Instead, the nature and content of the laws applicable, and the institutions through which it was administered, varied widely, reflecting the history, politics, demography and economic features of the colonies in question.
